Performing in Japan:
The Importance of Blogs, Books & Beyond

There are many misconceptions and misunderstandings about how music promotion is and isn't done in Japan. "Overseas acts can get promotion by touring as an opener" and "How can I get airplay on Japanese radio?" are examples of how overseas artists mistakenly look at the Japanese music scene as one that is similar to their own.
The main purpose of this session is to provide artists and others who are interested in the Japanese music market, with information about effective promotion as well as basic answers to questions that they may have.

Patrick St. Michel is a music writer based in Tokyo who has been covering Japanese music since 2009. His work has appeared in The Japan Times, Pitchfork, Billboard, Bandcamp Daily, The Atlantic and many more. He also runs the independent music blog Make Believe Melodies.
